The 1990s: Becomes Champ

After fighting as an amateur for a number of years, Mayweather turned pro in 1996 and took only two years to win his first title.

Mayweather fought a much-anticipated bout in May with Manny Pacquiao, which had taken years to set up but left many fans underwhelmed. In July, the World Boxing Organization stripped Mayweather of his welterweight title, after he refused to defend the belt against a challenger. He did defend his WBC and WBA titles in a September bout against Andre Berta.

After the fight, Mayweather said he was retiring from professional boxing, but fans are still hopeful for a comeback.
