What College Football Coach Makes The Most Money

The highest salaried coaches in college football

In light of Jimbo Fisher's contract extension at Texas A&M, it put the Aggies coach near the top in terms of annual compensation, per Stewart Mandel of The Athletic. Fisher now makes $9 million per year on a new 10-year deal through the 2031 season.

However, Fisher is not the highest paid coach in college football but he is only one of two in the country to top $9 million or more per year. The others near the top are more than $8 million or approach that figure.

"Fisher's contract was extended by four (4) years until December 31, 2031. The terms of the new contract include an annual salary of $9,000,000 starting on January 1, 2022 and will increase to $9,150,000 on January 1, 2023. In each of the following years, the base salary increases by $100,000 on January 1. All other terms relative to performance incentives and other elements remain the same," a press release from the school stated.

Let's dive into the highest-paid coaches in college football based on their annual compensation.

Salary: $6.9 million per year

Smart is one of the best coaches in college football and this could be the year he finally wins a national championship. They made the title game just a few years ago but lost to fellow SEC stalwart Alabama in overtime in an instant classic. The team has not been back since but returned to form in 2020. Now, with JT Daniels at quarterback, Georgia is the favorite in the SEC East and one of the few projected to be good enough to defeat Alabama, which went undefeated in 2020 and won the national championship, again.

Salary: $7.6 million per year

The Gators were knocking on the door of the College Football Playoff for the first time last year but could not finish, despite beating rival Georgia and making the SEC Championship Game. An upset loss at home to LSU followed by a shootout loss to Alabama for the conference crown ended all of the Gators' national title hopes. In 2021, they reset with new quarterback Emory Jones, who if he is good enough, could keep Florida at the top of the division and get back to the SEC Championship. It is an uphill climb this season, but Mullen's 29-9 record in three seasons at the school gives fans reason to believe.

Salary: $8.3 million per year

There is the big jump in salary as Swinney only tops out as the fourth-highest paid coach in America despite his success with the Tigers. Clemson returned to the playoff once again last season but was dominated by Ohio State and saw arguably the best quarterback in school history leave for the NFL. Now, DJ Uiagalelei runs the show and Clemson is still the ACC favorite, but it will not be without its challengers in 2021 with North Carolina and Miami lurking. Swinney certainly earned his salary considering he has a 140-33 record, seven conference titles and two national championships under his belt.

Salary: $8.9 million per year

The 2019 season was magical and Orgeron's been a successful head coach at LSU. But after winning a national title, the Tigers took a dip in 2020 with a questionable 5-5 record that could have gone two games in either direction. This season, there is pressure for Orgeron to right the ship and justify his salary. LSU should be back in contention but it has to deal with Alabama, Texas A&M and a rising Ole Miss in its own division. Still, Orgeron is an impressive 45-14 in five seasons with the Tigers, with his worst season coming last year and they still finished .500. A road test at UCLA to open the year will be a nice measuring stick.

Salary: $9 million per year

As explained above, Fisher got paid once again and it seems like he could be a Texas A&M lifer at this point. It is almost like people forget how good he was at Florida State where he won a national championship in 2013-14. The following year, Florida State made it to the inaugural College Football Playoff but lost to Oregon at the Rose Bowl. He has only been at Texas A&M for three seasons, compiling a 26-10 record, including 9-1 last season only losing to Alabama. He has 10 years remaining on his deal so the school is certainly expecting a national title or two out of Fisher before it is all said and done.

Salary: $9.3 million per year

No surprise here. The highest paid college football coach is the greatest college football coach in the history of the sport. Despite having a new quarterback, the team returns some playmakers on offense and defense with young bucks stepping up. Alabama is the true NFL factory at practically every position so as long as Saban is around and getting paid the big bucks, the Crimson Tide will be in position to win a national championship every single season. We are sure the folks in Tuscaloosa are perfectly fine with Saban's contract. There is no telling when he will step away from the game if he is still this elite. The man does have seven total national titles and six with Alabama.
